Pada jaman dahulu, di suatu desa di gunung, hiduplah sepasang kakek dan nenek yang baik hati. Pada suatu hari, ketika kakek sedang mencangkul ladang kecil di depan rumahnya, terdengar suara teriakan kakek tetangganya yang tamak.
“Hei! Jangan masuk ke ladang orang lain!”
“Guk, guk, guk!”
Kakek menggendong anjing kecil yang datang ke arahnya dengan berlari-lari itu. Kakek tetangga datang mengejarnya dan berkata, “Anjing itu merusak ladangku. Serahkan anjing itu padaku!”
Anjing kecil itu menggigil ketakutan dalam pelukan kakek.
“Tolong, tolong lepaskan dia.”

Kakek memohon sambil menundukkan kepalanya kepada kakek tetangga.
“Kalau nanti masuk lagi, aku pasti akan memukulnya!”
Kakek tetangga pulang dengan hati marah.

Kakek dan nenek yang baik hati memutuskan untuk memelihara anjing kecil itu karena ia sangat manis. Anjing kecil itu dinamai Shiro—dalam bahasa Jepang artinya ‘Putih’. Shiro berlari-larian dengan semangat dari pagi sampai malam. Ia makan nasi, lalu terus membesar dengan cepat. Kalau makan sepiring nasi, Shiro menjadi besar seukuran piring, kalau makan nasi dengan mangkok, ia menjadi besar seukuran mangkuk, kalau makan nasi dalam periuk, ia membesar seukuran periuk.

Pada suatu hari Shiro mendatangi Kakek, menggigit bajunya dan menarik kakek ke suatu tempat. Shiro menaikkan kakek di punggungnya dan pergi mendaki gunung di belakang rumah. Sesudah tiba di puncak gunung, Shiro menurunkan kakek dari punggungnya.

“Gali di sini, guk-guk! Gali di sini, guk-guk!” kata Shiro sambil menggonggong.
Walaupun kakek merasa aneh, ia mencoba menggali sesuai dengan permintaan Shiro. Ketika menggali, ada sesuatu yang terkena cangkulnya.
“Oh, apa ini...? I-ini u-uang keping emas!” Malamnya kakek dan nenek merasa betul-betul bahagia karena baru pertama kalinya mereka memiliki uang keping emas. Pada saat itu kakek dan nenek tetangga yang tamak datang. Keduanya telah melihat uang keping emas yang menggunung dan mengintip dari celah-celah pintu geser. Ia mendengar cerita dari kakek tentang bagaimana kakek menggali uang keping emas digunung belakang, lantas segera pulang dengan menarik paksa Shiro yang enggan.

Keesokan hari, kakek yang tamak pergi mendaki gunung belakang dengan menaiki punggung Shiro yang kemarin disiksanya sedemikian rupa. Shiro terhuyung-huyung dan akhirnya jatuh. Kakek mengira uang keping emas terpendam di tempat Shiro jatuh dan mulai menggali.
DUG!!!
Terdengar suara sesuatu yang terbentur cangkul.
“Wah, ada! Ha-ha-ha!!!”
Tepat ketika ia mengulurkan tangannya dengan senang hati karena mengira benda itu adalah uang keping emas, kakek yang tamak itu terkaget-kaget. Muncullah ular dan hantu berduyun-duyun.
“Kenapa kau menyusahkanku?”
Kakek tetangga yang marah itu akhirnya membunuh Shiro.

Kakek dan nenek yang baik hati merasa sedih sekali dan membuatkan makam untuk Shiro dan menanam pohon kecil di dekatnya. Ajaib, pohon itu tumbuh dengan cepat dan membesar. Besarnya kira-kira sebesar rengkuhan kedua tangan kakek.

Pada suatu hari, kakek dan nenek datang ke makam untuk menaruh bunga-bunga. Mereka menengadah ke arah pohon besar itu. Lantas pohon itu tampaknya berkata sesuatu.
“Tolong buat aku menjadi lesung, tolong buat aku menjadi lesung….”
Kakek dan nenek memutuskan untuk membuat lesung sesuai dengan permintaan pohon itu.
“Oh, aku punya ide. Mari kita tumbuk mochi untuk sesajen di makam Shiro.”
Kakek dan nenek mulai menumbuk mochi dengan lesung yang baru selesai dibuat.
“Hup!” “Yak!”
“Hup!” “Yak!”
Mereka menumbuk mochi berulang kali.

Kakek dan nenek bergotong-royong menumbuk mochi. Jadilah kue mochi yang tampaknya empuk dan lezat. Dan...kue mochi itu berkilau-kilau!
“Wah, Kek, apa ini?”
“Hmm, ini kue mochi yang aneh....”
Kakek dan nenek mengambil kue mochi yang berkilau-kilau itu, merobek-robek dan membentuknya menjadi bulat-bulat. Lantas, kue mochi itu mulai mengeluarkan kilau emas yang cemerlang!
“I-ini, uang keping emas!”
Pada saat itu kakek tetangga muncul lagi dan berkata, “Hei, apakah kamu mau meminjam lesung itu padaku?”
“Tapi ini kenang-kenangan dari Shiro….”

Tanpa mempedulikan kata kakek, si kakek dan nenek tetangga pergi membawa lesung itu.
Kakek dan nenek tetangga mulai menumbuk. Mereka tidak bisa menunggu sampai selesai menumbuk, jadi sering mengintip ke dalam lesung.
“Wah, Kek, warna mochi tidak berubah sedikitpun. Jangan-jangan kalau dibulatkan mungkin berubah.”
Kakek dan nenek tetangga merobek-robek mochi dan membentuknya menjadi bulat-bulat. Lantas mochi yang putih itu berubah menjadi arang hitam dan meloncat-loncat sehingga muka kakek dan nenek menjadi hitam legam. Kakek dan nenek yang marah membelah-belah lesung menjadi bagian-bagian kecil dan membakarnya di perapian.

Kakek dan nenek yang baik hati merasa sangat sedih ketika mengetahui hal itu. Lalu mereka mendatangi perapian rumah tetangga dan meraup abunya.
“Shiro....”
Kakek berpikir, paling tidak ia akan pulang membawa abu ini untuk mengenang Shiro. Lalu ia memasukkannya ke dalam keranjang.
“Mari kita taburkan abu ini di ladang dan kita tanam lobak yang digemari Shiro dulu.”
Kakek menuruti kata Nenek dan pergi ke ladang untuk menaburkan abu.

Abu itu ditiup angin dan tersebar. Pohon mati mulai bersinar dan bunga sakura bermekaran!
“Nek, lihat! Bunga sakura!”
Kakek yang gembira segera menabur-naburkan abu.
Alangkah ajaibnya! Pohon yang mati segera berbunga setelah ditaburi abu. Dalam sekejap mata, bunga sakura berbunga di mana-mana.
“Bunga sakura mekar, padahal sekarang bukan musim semi! ”

Orang-orang desa terkejut. Cerita ini bertiup dari gunung ke desa, dari desa ke desa, dari desa ke kota, dan sampai juga ke benteng....
Sang Raja penguasa benteng yang mendengar cerita itu datang ke tempat kakek dengan disertai para pengiringnya.

“Jangan segan-segan, lakukan saja dan perlihatkan kepada kami!”
Si Kakek menaburkan abu di atas pohon mati.
“Mekarlah bunga pada pohon mati!”
Abu yang dijatuhkan menari-nari, dan dalam sekejap pohon mati itu berubah menjadi pohon yang penuh bunga sakura.
Sang Raja merasa gembira sekali.
“Wahai kakek nomor satu di Jepang yang bisa memekarkan bunga, aku akan memberimu hadiah.”

“Tentang hadiah itu, tunggu sebentar!” Majulah si kakek tetangga yang tamak.
“Akulah kakek nomor satu di Jepang yang bisa memekarkan bunga. Dengan abu ini, akan kuperlihatkan bunga yang mekar tiba-tiba dalam satu tarikan napas.”
Kakek yang tamak mengumpulkan abu yang tersisa di perapian. Lalu ia memanjat pohon dan tiba-tiba menaburkan abu. Tapi abu itu malah jatuh di atas kepala sang Raja.
“Ha-hatttttsy!!!” sang Raja bersin-bersin.

Kakek yang kerjanya hanya meniru orang lain itu akhirnya dijebloskan ke dalam penjara.
